Sheepscot River Dams Interpretive Signage Design

Client: Atlantic Salmon Federation & Inter-Fluve Inc.

Sheepscot Watershed, ME | 2016

In the fall of 2015, LVBrown Studio became involved in a multi-year effort led by the Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) to modify two dams along the Sheepscot River in Maine. The goal was to restore the natural migration of anadromous fish species—alewife, Atlantic salmon, herring, and American eel— along the Sheepscot River while celebrating the cultural and historical importance of the dams.

Conceptual design renderings presented in town hall meetings helped gain community support for the project. In March 2017, the Town of Alna voted overwhelmingly to modify the dam structure.  In Phase II, Lauren consulted project engineers for site design features, access/circulation, and the overlook platform architectural appearance.

LVB designed interpretive signage panels for welcome kiosks and overlook platforms. The panels tell a visual story of the dam’s historical importance for the Sheepscot Valley and describe the intricate web of riverine ecology. The project was completed in the Fall of 2019.
